A recent study performed in Italy investigated the efficacy of a Brainsway deep TMS H-coil, in the treatment of 14 alcohol use disorder patients, and the effects on the brain as reflected in Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), an imaging method which detects concentrations of specific molecules. The study compared real deep TMS and sham (placebo) treatments of 4 weeks. It was found that only the real treatment led to a significant reduction in alcohol intake. Moreover, at baseline significant brain differences were seen in SPECT between patients and healthy subjects. After 4 weeks of treatment, real deep TMS led to significant brain changes as seen by SPECT, and the patients parameters became similar to healthy subjects. No such changes were seen in the patients receiving sham. The treatment was well tolerated and no serious adverse events were reported.
